Slow Adventures

The Swartberg Pass
Twenty-four kilometres of hand-built gravel road over folded red rock, built in the 1880s and still breathtaking. It starts minutes from the gate.

Meiringspoort
Twenty-five river crossings through a sandstone gorge, and a waterfall pool that is cold even in January. Forty minutes away.

The Saturday Market
Five minutes down Pastorie Street: jam, Karoo olives, sourdough and figs under the old trees. Go early; the koeksisters go first.

Massage on the Stoep
Sixty minutes with a therapist from the village on the shaded stoep, the garden humming beyond. Add it when you book.

Long Breakfasts
Apricot jam from the tree by the gate, olives from down the road, bread still warm. Served on the stoep every morning.

Afternoons by the Pool
When the Karoo heat peaks, the stone plunge pool under the pomegranate tree is the only place to be.
Some of the darkest skies in the country.
On a clear night the Milky Way throws a shadow.
