Our Story

Three Winters, One Cottage

How a tired 1904 cottage on Pastorie Street became the quietest four rooms in Prince Albert.

In Marietjie’s Words

“Out here the quiet does most of the hosting. I just keep the coffee hot, the beds soft and the stoep ready for when the stars come out.”

Marietjie van der Merwe, Owner

The Cottage

Over a Hundred Years on Pastorie Street

  1. 1904

    Built by Hand

Mud-brick walls half a metre thick and a yellowwood roof, raised beside the old pastorie that gave Pastorie Street its name.

  2. 1950s

    A Family Home

Three generations grew up behind the green shutters. Someone planted the fig tree by the gate; nobody remembers who.

  3. 2019

    Found Again

Marietjie van der Merwe found it empty, the roof sagging and a family of owls living in the kitchen. She bought it for the walls.

  4. 2022

    Karoo Stille

After three winters of restoration the cottage opened its doors as four quiet rooms, a plunge pool and a long breakfast table.

Meet Your Host

Marietjie van der Merwe

Owner and Host

Marietjie grew up on a sheep farm outside Beaufort West and spent twenty years running a busy Cape Town kitchen before the Karoo called her home. She bakes the bread, makes the apricot jam and knows exactly which koppie to watch the sunset from.

Ask her about the Swartberg Pass, the best koeksisters at the market or where to lie on the lawn for the Milky Way. She answers every booking herself.
