Swaelkloof Means Swallow Ravine
Every spring the swallows come back to nest under the eaves of the old stone cellar, and we take it as the sign that the year has turned. We bought this run-down farm in 2011, replanted, and made the first Swaelkloof vintage in 2014.
Thirty-eight hectares on the slopes above the town, twenty-two under vine between 280 and 420 metres. Cover crops, no herbicides, a flock of ducks for the snails, and an olive grove of 400 trees. The 1978 Chenin Blanc block is still farmed by hand.
